He began to write fiction early in life, his first stories appearing in collected form under the title ''From the People'' (''Aus dem Volk''; Stuttgart, 1852), and proving very popular. They were followed by ''Out of the Old Time and the New'' (''Aus alter und neuer Zeit''; Stuttgart, 1854), ''As the People Speak'' (''Wie das Volk spricht''; 1855), ''Skizzenbuch aus Norddeutschland, Schwanwiek'' (1856), ''Bewegtes Leben'' (1856) and ''Days that Are No More'' (''Vergangene Tag''; Prague, 1859). ''Wie das Volk spricht'' was a collection of old proverbial sayings which Hoefer revised and expanded over the years, and an edition appeared in 1876. ''German Hearts'' (''Deutsche Herzen''; Prague, 1860) was widely read. Of his longer works, the most notable were ''Norien.
